McCain goes back to Washington

Tonight, Senator Obama and I participated in the first debate of the general election. It was a spirited debate and I believe the difference between our visions for America were made very clear.

In a few hours, I will return to Washington to resume negotiations with the Administration and Congressional leaders from both parties to forge a bipartisan solution to our economic crisis. I am optimistic we will come to a final agreement soon. All voices must be represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners.

We cannot be interested in who would get credit for finding a solution and who would be blamed if an agreement cannot be reached. We must put our country first to solve this economic crisis. Because in the end, that's what leaders do in times of crisis.

Our next president and Congress will face challenging times that require selfless leadership. They must find solutions to issues like the economy, national security, and energy independence. I'm ready to work with Governor Palin and our Congressional allies to address the nation's most pressing challenges. Make no mistake, we are ready to lead and the Obama-Biden Democrats are not.

But, the truth is that we won't win without your support. We're less than 40 days away from Election Day and polls in races across the country are extremely close. In the final weeks of this campaign, we will need to fund crucial get-out-the-vote and grassroots activities that will assist our entire ticket, from the top to the bottom to secure victory on Election Day. I'm asking you to help us by making a contribution right now to McCain-Palin Victory 2008.

First Presidential Debate 9-26 in Oxford, MS

ARLINGTON, VA -- McCain-Palin 2008 Communications Director Jill Hazelbaker issued the following statement on tonight's Presidential Debate:

"There was one man who was presidential tonight, that man was John McCain. There was another who was political, that was Barack Obama. John McCain won this debate and controlled the dialogue throughout, whether it was the economy, taxes, spending, Iraq or Iran. There was a leadership gap, a judgment gap, and a boldness gap on display tonight, a fact Barack Obama acknowledged when he said John McCain was right at least five times. Tonight's debate showed John McCain in command of the issues and presenting a clear agenda for America's future."

Tallahassee—Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer released the following statement regarding the Presidential Debate this evening:

"Tonight's debate further illustrates John McCain's remarkable leadership and judgment. Over the course of this week, we have been faced with tough and alarming challenges, but the one constant has been John McCain's insistence that we put country first and work to protect American taxpayers. The same maverick leadership that led Senator McCain to take this remarkable step this week was evident tonight.

"Under the leadership of John McCain, we will address our economic crisis, maintain our national security, and find common-sense, bipartisan resolutions to the challenges that face our nation's families, homeowners, and small businesses."

House Republicans' bailout proposal

Economic Rescue Principles proposed by Representatives Eric Cantor of Virginia and Jeb Hensarling of Texas

Common Sense Plan to Have Wall Street Fund the Recovery, Not Taxpayers

* Rather than providing taxpayer funded purchases of frozen mortgage assets, we should adopt a mortgage insurance approach to solve the problem.

* Currently the federal government insures approximately half of all mortgage backed securities. (MBS) We can insure the rest of current outstanding MBS; however, rather than taxpayers funding insurance, the holders of these assets should pay for it. Treasury Department can design a system to charge premiums to the holders of MBS to fully finance this insurance.

Have Private Capital Injection to the Financial Markets, Not Tax Dollars

* Instead of injecting taxpayer capital into the market to produce liquidity, private capital can be drawn into the market by removing regulatory and tax barriers that are currently blocking private capital formation. Too much private capital is sitting on the sidelines during this crisis.

* Temporary tax relief provisions can help companies free up capital to maintain operations, create jobs, and lend to one another. In addition, we should allow for a temporary suspension of dividend payments by financial institutions and other regulatory measures to address the problems surrounding private capital liquidity.

Immediate Transparency, Oversight, and Market Reform

* Increase Transparency. Require participating firms to disclose to Treasury the value of their mortgage assets on their books, the value of any private bids within the last year for such assets, and their last audit report.

* Limit Federal Exposure for High Risk Loans: Mandate that the GSEs no longer securitize any unsound mortgages.

* Call on the SEC to audit reports of failed companies to ensure that the financial standing of these troubled companies was accurately portrayed.

* Wall Street Executives should not benefit from taxpayer funding.

* Call on the SEC to review the performance of the Credit Rating Agencies and their ability to accurately reflect the risks of these failed investment securities.

* Create a blue ribbon panel with representatives of Treasury, SEC, and the Fed to make recommendations to Congress for reforms of the financial sector by January 1, 2009.

Veteran Victory 2008 Tour Bus Comes to Panama City

...an excerpt from Bay Republican Times #2
Barry Gibbs, Publisher

"At 9:00 sharp on Wednesday morning the Veteran Victory 2008 tour bus
pulled into Bay County Republican headquarters to a cheering crowd. Over sixty sign-waving
patriots greeted the quartet of dignitaries and were treated to a few minutes of personal chats
with the gentlemen before the program began.
The four included Captain Bob Stumpf, USN (Ret), former commander of the Blue
Angels aerial performance team and now Co-Chair of Florida Veterans for McCain+Palin,
Master Chief Bill Randall, USN (Ret), former Command Master Chief of the Great Lakes Naval
Training Station, as well as former Governor of Louisiana Buddy Roemer, and Colonel Tom
Moe, USAF (Ret), former Hanoi Hilton-mate of Senator John McCain.
Bay County REC Chairman, Ted Haney, first introduced Captain Stumpf to the delighted
faithful. Captain Stumpf told of his tour of duty in a disintegrating training command, to which
McCain was assigned shortly thereafter, and how quickly McCain’s overarching positive
presence turned it around. “Simply put, John McCain brings leadership to the table,” he
concluded.

Colonel Moe spoke briefly of their time in the infamous North Vietnamese prison, but quickly turned his address into an uplifting message of the deep integrity and unquenchable
character of Senator McCain.
“When people ask, ‘Where’s the beef?’ I tell you that there’s only one
man you can believe in. John McCain is incapable of telling a lie, and he always
puts country first!” CMC Bill Randall echoed Moe’s words, adding an encouragement to party
workers to match McCain’s honor. “We must leave the low road to others. We can
take the high road and talk about what Senator McCain and Governor Palin are
going to do for America.”

Buddy Roemer talked humorously of his wild ride with the McCain campaign
since the first days before the Iowa caucuses, but ended with an almost
benedictory praise of his good friend, “John McCain will reach across the nation,
he will reach across genders, he will reach across race and parties in order to build a coalition of responsibility for America.”

Republican Congressional candidates feature "fresh faces"

November 4, 2008 is going to be a very unusual election - and not just for the obvious reasons.

Yes, Americans will choose between the first woman on the GOP ticket and the first African American on the Democrat ticket. However - and this is unprecedented - 30 Republican incumbents retired this year, leaving more than two dozen "open" seats.

What does this mean to the Republican Party?

Well, it means a combined 412 years of incumbency within the GOP is stepping down, to be replaced by a set of fresh faces.

This is very exciting for the future of our party. These are men and women who, much like Sarah Palin, are parents of young children and understand what it's like to balance family, career and public service.

The youngest Republican likely to join our ranks in November is Aaron Schock from Illinois. Aaron is 27-years old, and the youngest member to serve on his school board. Darren White from New Mexico was a Katrina rescue volunteer and served in the Army's 82nd Airborne. Jennifer Horn has five children, is an award-winning radio show host and active in her community.

Today, we want to
introduce you to some of the fresh faces campaigning to represent us in Congress. They are independent voices who want to change business as usual. They are the men and women who
will go to Washington and fight alongside John McCain and Sarah Palin.

We're proud of our candidates and what they stand for, so get to know them today.
We urge you to learn more about them, and after you've read about their background and campaign, please consider making a donation to their campaign. You can learn more these candidates and donate to any of their races, by clicking here now.

Touching Sarah Palin story...from the Rush Limbaugh Show

CALLER: Hey, listen, Rush, longtime listener, first-time caller, one of those Bible, family, gun clingers from western Pennsylvania.

RUSH: Thank you.

CALLER: And I wanted to share a story with you. A week ago last Saturday we went to the Palin-McCain rally in Washington, Pennsylvania, was the day after he announced her, and we have a five-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, and we made a sign that said: 'We Love Kids with Down Syndrome.' So when they pulled in in their bus the sign did catch their, McCain and Palin and the rest of their family, it caught their eye, we could tell, they gave us a thumbs-up from the bus, so we were all excited just by that --

RUSH: Wait, wait, wait. Who gave you the thumbs up, McCain and Palin?

CALLER: McCain, Palin, Cindy McCain, we could see them from the bus. We were in a position where we had eye contact with them --

RUSH: Oh, cool!

CALLER: My wife was holding our daughter.

RUSH: Very, very, very cool.

CALLER: It was really cool, Rush. I was like, 'Wow, that's awesome,' because I love Governor Palin and so I thought that's really neat. So then we moved around as the bus was getting ready to pull out, we kind of positioned ourselves so we could just wave them on and a Secret Service agent came up to us and said, 'Hey, can you come with us?' I was like, 'Do we have a choice?'

RUSH: (laughing) You shouldn't have worried. It's not the Clinton administration.

Letter to Congressman Boyd

This is a letter that I will be sending to Congressman Boyd. Feel free to copy and put in your own words to let him know that you support offshore drilling. Here is his mailing address:

30 W. Government St.
Suite 203
Panama City, FL 32401

Dear Congressman Boyd,
As an active voting resident in your area, I urge you to allow for offshore drilling off the coast of Florida… both of them. Congress has restricted offshore exploration along 85% of the Outer Continental Shelf since 1982. The White House has affirmed the restrictions through an executive order that was signed by President George H. W. Bush and then extended by President Clinton through 2012. Current domestic oil production averages about 5 million barrels per day and is projected to reach 5.3 million barrels per day in 2009. America’s consumption of is about 20.7 million barrels per day and growing. As a result, we import more than 60% of our crude oil. However, relying on foreign sources transfers large sums of money to often hostile regions and can have a disastrous effect on our economy.Past oil price shocks and price manipulations by OPEC have cost the U.S. economy $7 trillion between 1979 and 2000. Each price shock has resulted in a recession. By opening up the vast federal land and offshore locations to drilling, America will be able to take one step closer to energy independence and strengthen its national security. As Florida residents we need this now!Any announcements of a shift in the current oil policy will cause a reaction from oil speculators.Since an increase in domestic oil production will lead to an increase in future oil supplies, traders will bid down futures contracts which will in turn lower current spot prices. Moreover, the existence of a lag time between opening an area to oil development and oil production reaching the market should not be used as an excuse for perpetual inaction. The situation will only be worse in the future if we fail to act.I care for the environment just as much as any other Florida resident does. But much of the environmental hysteria is just hype.Between 1985 to 2001, offshore operators produced 7 billion barrels and had a spill rate of only .001%.Even after the Gulf was hammered by both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, there were no major oil spills from offshore production, and the very minor spills released only 17,000 barrels. That small amount is less oil than what naturally seeps into the Gulf every two weeks.
These spills were so insignificant that no environmental consequences occurred as a result. This is because we have developed technologies that allow us to produce oil in an environmentally safe and sound manner.Furthermore, American environmental standards are far more rigorous than any of its kind in the world. Any exploration of the OCS performed will be under these environmental standards and be done in the most environmentally safe manner as possible. Please Mr. Boyd, I urge you to reconsider your stance on offshore drilling.Florida families simply can’t afford these high gas prices anymore. We need both action and leadership on behalf of our legislators to untie these chains that bind us.Will you be such a leader?
Sincerely,

Eric Wall,
Panama City, Florida

McCain to suspend campaign

Republican presidential candidate John McCain is reportedly suspending his campaign to return to Washington, D.C. for bailout talks, according to FOX News and NBC News.

FOX News reports McCain is asking for Friday's presidential debate in Oxford, Mississippi to be postponed to help focus on the domestic front and is asking Obama to suspend his campaign as well.

MCCAIN: America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward.I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration’ proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved.I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.

President Bush to address nation tonight, 9-24

WASHINGTON (AP) — With a financial rescue plan facing a tough sell on Capitol Hill, President Bush has scheduled a prime-time, televised address Wednesday night, hoping to persuade the public that the massive proposal is relevant to them and "get this over the goal line" with lawmakers.

"The president believes it is important for the American people to fully understand the depths of the crisis affecting our country, how that affects them," White House press secretary Dana Perino said in announcing the speech. "I think everyone will tune in tonight because we are facing a once-in-a-century crisis in our financial markets."

The address, to be delivered from the White House's grand East Room, is to be between 12 and 14 minutes long, Perino said. Bush last gave a prime-time address to the nation 377 days ago, on the Iraq war, when he announced a gradual reduction in U.S. forces there.

Florida Hispanics favor McCain-Palin

Florida Hispanics are going against the national grain in the presidential race, two new surveys show.

A Sun Sentinel-Florida Times-Union poll found that 48 percent of likely Hispanic voters in Florida back Republican presidential candidate John McCain, compared with 41 percent who support Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Ten percent remain undecided.

In contrast, a Pew Hispanic Center poll released Thursday shows Hispanic registered voters across the country favor Obama over McCain, 66 percent to 23 percent. It found that half of all Latinos across the country think the situation has worsened for them over the past year. The reasons: a slumping economy and stepped-up immigration enforcement.

A third poll released Sept. 10 by NDN, a Democratic-leaning, Washington, D.C.-based think tank, found that from 74 percent to 86 percent of Hispanics in four swing states — New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and Florida — said the immigration issue was an important factor in their voting decision. Immigration ranked as the eighth-most important issue for all Florida voters; the economy and jobs ranked number one, the newspaper poll shows.

Make calls for McCain-Palin 08 from home

Last week, our campaign launched a grassroots effort to put you in touch with voters all across the country through our online phone bank.

The polls all show this election is in a dead heat, and we expect the polls to stay close until Election Day. That's why it's so important for you to get involved today. This election will be won by turning out key voters all over the country. You can help the McCain-Palin campaign win by taking 30 minutes out of your evening to make 20 calls for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Follow this link to make calls: www.JohnMcCain.com/PhoneBank

The Obama-Biden campaign has hired hundreds of paid staff and is spending millions of dollars bombarding undecided voters with advertisements filled with negative, misleading and false information about John McCain and Governor Palin. We need your help to combat this and get the truth out to these voters. You are the most effective surrogate we have in this campaign. By reaching out to undecided voters, one by one, you are taking a crucial step towards our victory.

Today, we are only six weeks away from Election Day and we need your help right now. In such a close election, taking 30 minutes to make 20 calls for John McCain and Governor Palin can make the difference.

Newt Gingrich: bailout package a "dead loser"

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that any lawmaker who votes for the Bush administration's $700 billion bailout package, which he called a “dead loser,” will face defeat in November.

Gingrich (R-Ga.) said he thinks Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is trying to scare lawmakers into passing the bailout plan quickly and without thorough study.

“I think what Paulson hopes to do is say, ‘If you don’t do exactly what I want you to do, the whole world’s going to collapse on Tuesday’,” Gingrich said.

The former Speaker, talking to reporters at a lunch, added that he expects Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) to back the plan. He predicted that, if Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) ends up opposing the administration proposal, there will be an overnight “emergence of a McCain/reform wing of the Republican Party.”

Gingrich said that occurrence would turn the election on its head, with Republicans running ads that feature Obama with President Bush on the same team in pushing for a “nightmare” bailout plan.

The former Speaker said that by November, the flaws in the plan will be apparent, and voters will “break against anyone who votes for it.”

What you can do to help McCain 2008

There are many ways you can help the Bay County Republican effort to
get John McCain and Sarah Palin elected to the White House. If you want to
help, please drop by the Republican Headquarters at 1607 Lisenby Avenue, or
call 763-8656, and tell the volunteers there what you'd like to do.

If you can only do one thing to help the McCain-Palin ticket this year,
please consider being a poll watcher. Poll watcher applications, in
addition to an info packet describing poll watching duties, are available at
the Headquarters. Poll watchers are needed for both early voting and for
Election Day. For more info, please feel free to call me at the numbers
below.

The Headquarters will be open tonight until 8:00 for phone banking.
Otherwise, the hours of operation at HQ are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday
through Friday
, and 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tomorrow (Wed., Sept.
24) HQ will be open an hour early at 9:00 a.m. for a visit from the Veterans
for McCain tour bus. Please plan to join us as we welcome veterans who have
served with Sen. John McCain.

This Saturday we'll be sign waving for McCain-Palin at the intersection of
Hwy. 93 and Hwy. 22 in Callaway. (Look for the Walgreen's on the northwest
corner and the CVS on the northeast corner.) Following the sign wave, the
Panhandle Asian Republican Women will feed sign wavers at their yard sale,
located at 5906 Ivy Road. The Asian Republican Women are wonderful cooks,
so this will be quite a treat!

Thanks, as always, for everything you're doing to get our great ticket
elected to the White House!

Gov. Palin Breaks Attendance Record in Central FL Appearance

The Villages, FL-Governor Sarah Palin participated in a Road to Victory Rally today in The Villages, Florida, telling the 60,000 attendees how she and John McCain will reform Washington and turn the nation in a new, positive direction.

"We were thrilled to welcome Governor Palin to Florida for her first trip to the state," noted RPOF Chairman Jim Greer. "Change is coming to Washington, and it will begin on January 20th when we start referring to John McCain and Governor Palin not as 'Senator' and 'Governor,' but as 'Mr. President' and 'Madam Vice President.'

The crowd at The Villages, estimated at 60,000, heard from Attorney General Bill McCollum and Chairman Greer and enjoyed entertainment by country music star Aaron Tippin and other local artists. People traveled from across Florida and from other states to hear from the Republican Vice Presidential nominee.

"Today Floridians were fortunate to have not only one but two of the nation's most popular Governors, with the highest approval ratings, in our state," concluded Chairman Greer. "Today we proved that Florida is not only McCain Country, it is Palin Country too."

"An American Carol" Update

By Eric Odom
#dontgo Movement

I just got off the phone with the PR representative for An American Carol and they are VERY excited about this final two week stretch of marketing for the movie which will open on October 3rd. They see our network as a vital realm for marketing the movie, and they will be getting us some great insider goodies in return for our help.

Those of us who were in Vegas for CLC this past weekend got a chance to meet with the star of the film, Kevin Farley, and I spent a great deal of time with his "handlers" discussing new media strategy and ways they can harness the internet for grassroots and grasstops mobilization. I think they are on the right track, but they're WAYYYYY behind.

It is vital that we help promote this film, because if it does well in
the theaters on opening weekend, I'm told we'll start seeing more conservatives films in the near future. So I'm writing this in an attempt to recruit your help.

The following is a list of ways to help promote the film and be
involved in the online organization.

1) The most obvious... blog about the movie
http://americancarol.com/

2) Join the new Facebook group
http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=27629518445

3) Join the American Caroler Action Network
http://americancarol.wildfireactionnetwork.com

I have about 40 or so hats (the same hat that Kevin Farley wears in the movie) and the good folks with the marketing firm are working on getting me some signed movie posters.

We will also be hosting a conference call/live podcast with Kevin
Farley himself on the line to take questions.

Stay tuned for more details...

Why I am supporting John McCain

By Louis William Rose
Jacksonville, FL

I am supporting John McCain because I am a member of the Republican party, and he is the nominee of our party. That is the main reason, because I have sworn an oath to support Republicans when they run for office, and when I say I am going to do something I try with all my strength to do it. I expect my friends to do what they say they will do and to keep their promises. I expect my intimate true friends to keep their promises to me even it means their very life is forfeit, for that is what I intend to do if I make a promise to them. I am amazed that anyone can do otherwise and still show their face in public and if I were King I would hang those who do one thing and say another, especially in politics. But (sigh) that is of course why I do not intend to run for office. If , IF I say, if the day should ever come when I feel that I can no longer support the Republican Party, that will be the day when I resign from it, formally, and speak loudly and longly and publicly my criticisms of it. That is what the honorable man should do . But today, I am supporting John McCain because I am a member of the Republican party, and he is this nominee of our party, and I am a proud Republican. I am opposed to those individuals who do not support Republicans, and who do not support the Republican Party. I do not want to see them get their candidates elected, I do not want to see them elected. I only want to see them convinced to become Republicans.
John McCain is not perfect man (surprise!) and I have some issues I would dearly love to discuss with him at length. Nevertheless we are both veterans and he is a combat veteran who loves America. I believe his experience as a prisoner of war has caused him to devote his life as a servant of his country. I trust the confidence that the men who were imprisoned with him have in him. I know that he will never allow torture, and will punish those who do. I trust him to do what he thinks is best for the country in his heart, and I know that he has Sarah Palin, who I think is better qualified than McCain, Obama, Biden, Hillary, Bush II, Bill Clinton, Bush I, and Jimmy Carter. Better qualified than all of them, and after a little seasoning will be as qualified as Reagan ever was. I am delighted with McCain's choice for a running mate, and I trust him all the more for it.
Meanwhile I continue to work within the party to see that it moves in the right direction, back where it came from. We are the party who ended slavery, we are the party who believes in liberty, we are the party who believes in less government, and lower taxes, and more guns in the hands of our citizens. We have failed as a people to bear our responsiblity as political actors. We must move and move quickly to re-secure our liberty, and limited government in the State of Florida. We must do everything that can be done, here first, and then later we and other like minded Republicans can put Washington aright. But today our mission is to support John McCain, with our time, and our money, and our vote and our loud voices. Vote for John McCain! God Bless the United States and the Republican Party!
